Saddle Up: Equestrian Book Reviews

"Can't no one catch the Phantom," Grandpa yelled above the noise. "For two years she's give the horse laugh to the best roundup men we got on Chincoteague. What makes ye think she's going to ask to be caught?"

-Misty of Chincoteague (Henry, 1947)

Misty of Chincoteague, published in 1947 by acclaimed children's author Marguerite Henry, follows brother-and-sister duo Paul and Maureen Beebe in their attempts to round up the infamous wild pony known as "the Phantom." Though originally bent on being the proud owners of the elusive creature, the two, instead, find themselves falling in love with the mare's foal, a baby by the name of Misty. In an interesting twist blending fiction with reality, the little filly turns out to have once been a living, breathing Chincoteague Pony cared for by the real-life Beebe's and owned by Henry herself. Does this sound like a book you'd enjoy reading? It's one I highly recommend!

After all, as equestrians, we need something to do when we can't be in the barn, right? Why not fill those hours with a great book? Let my reviews guide you toward your next favorite read!

I offer unique insights into equestrian-themed literature.

Who would you trust more with your beloved horse: A person with no equine experience or a person who's worked with them for years? Why not take the same approach in choosing your next book?

As a fellow literature-loving equestrian, allow me to offer to you my take on the books that fill this incredible genre of writing. After all, I'm as passionate about horses--and books--as you are!
